Who they are

MediaMarkt is the consumer electronics chain: televisions, phones, computers, white goods, in big stores in and around shopping centres. Some of the stores in Belgium traded as Saturn before the group brought them under the MediaMarkt name, which is why two of the photographs on this page still say Saturn. The screens outlived the sign above the door.

What they needed

An electronics retailer sells on offers. The financing deal, the delivery and installation service, this week’s price on a television. At the entrance of a shopping centre that message has to be bright enough to read under an atrium roof and wide enough to be seen from the escalator, and no television comes in that shape. It is an LED banner: a strip of LED modules built to the size of the wall it hangs on.

The hardware, the modules, the controllers, the mounting and the maintenance, is the business of HTV LED, an LED display specialist based in Luxembourg and active across Belgium. What an LED company does not want to build is a content management system. That is where easyCMS comes in, and it is the arrangement Romain Thys describes above: they sell and install the screens, we run the software behind them.

What runs on the screens

Campaign content, changed as often as the offers change: the financing terms, the delivery and installation promise, the list of departments, and the visuals of the national campaign. The banner in the photograph is doing all of it at once, in zones, with a face on the right to point at the rest. Inside the store, a long LED strip above the film and series shelves runs the release of the week, which is content that changes every Friday and would be a print job every Friday without it.

How it is set up

LED walls have odd resolutions. A banner might be a few thousand pixels wide and a few hundred tall, and no template made for a 16:9 television fits it. In easyCMS a layout is designed at the wall’s own pixel size, so the content is built for the strip it will play on, in large type and high contrast, without fine detail that a coarse pixel pitch would swallow. The player drives the LED controller over HDMI like any other screen. There is more on this in content creation for LED displays.

Each store’s screens sit in a display group. A national campaign is scheduled to every group at once; a store-specific line is scheduled to one store. The content is managed centrally, and the screens in Luxembourg and the screens in Belgium show the same campaign on the same day.

Why a partner installs it

LED is a hardware trade: site surveys, structural mounting, power, controllers, and someone to call when a module fails. We do not do that, and we do not pretend to. HTV LED does it, and brings easyCMS in as the CMS: their customers, their hardware, our software. If you are an LED supplier or an installer, the white label and reseller page describes how that arrangement works, down to whose name is on the login page. If you are a retailer looking at your own storefront, start with LED displays for digital signage and the LED wall calculator, which sizes a wall from the cabinet up.

What it costs

A set-up like this, priced for 10 screens

893 € once. 299 € PRO account with one licence, plus 9 × 66 €. Licences added later, one at a time, are 99 € each: 1,190 € in total.

A worked example, not the customer's invoice: the real screen count is theirs to publish, not ours.

One payment of 49€ covers your first display. Twenty restaurants, one canteen or a shopping-centre LED wall: the CMS is the same.
