Who they are
Santa Lucia is a supermarket chain in Cameroon: full-range stores with a bakery, a pastry counter and a line of checkouts, the kind of shop a family visits every week. The screens are above the tills, one per checkout, where a customer stands still for a minute or two with nothing to do but look up.
What they needed
A supermarket’s promotions change every week and are set centrally. The problem at the checkout was the same as anywhere: printed material is out of date before it is hung, and the till is the one place the store has a captive audience and no way to use it. The screens carry the week’s offers, seasonal campaigns such as the back-to-school promotion in the photograph, and the store’s own brand, in French, with prices in CFA francs.
How it is set up
Landscape screens above each checkout, driven by players that receive their content from easyCMS and keep it. That last part is the point of the set-up. An internet connection in a busy store is not something to build a display around, so the content is downloaded to the player and plays from there: a dropped line means the schedule keeps running, and the player fetches the next week’s offers when the connection returns. We wrote up the principle in digital signage without internet.
The content is managed from one place, for every store, in one account. A promotion is built once as a layout and scheduled to the checkout group; the head office changes the offer, and every till shows it.
Why we mention it
Most of our customers are in Europe, and most of what we write assumes a European connection and a European power supply. Santa Lucia is a reminder that the set-up travels: the same player, the same CMS, the same account, on the other side of the Mediterranean and beyond. What we look for in a player and a network to make that work is on the players page.
If you run shops, digital signage for retail covers the rest: windows, aisles and the checkout.
A set-up like this, priced for 5 screens
313 € once. 49 € account with one licence, plus 4 × 66 €. Licences added later, one at a time, are 99 € each: 445 € in total.
A worked example, not the customer's invoice: the real screen count is theirs to publish, not ours.
