Samsung Tizen, LG webOS or an Android Player: Which to Buy

Tizen vs webOS vs Android player: how built-in signage displays compare with an external player on cost, video walls, licences and 24/7 duty cycles.

easyCMS runs on all four platforms, so we have no reason to push you at one of them. The short answer is that a display with the player built in, Samsung Tizen or LG webOS Signage, is the tidiest choice when you are buying new panels; an external Android player is the most flexible choice and the only route to a synchronised video wall; and Windows still earns its place when the content is complicated or the PCs already exist.

The expensive mistake is buying the wrong panel. A consumer LG or Samsung television is not a webOS Signage or Tizen signage display and will not run the player, whatever the box says about smart apps. That trap is worth more attention than the platform choice itself, so it has its own section below.

Linux players are free software too, and there is a note on less common setups in other players. Everything below assumes an easyCMS account, which comes with one display licence included.

What a system-on-chip display actually is

A system-on-chip display, usually shortened to SoC, has the computer inside the panel. LG calls its version webOS Signage, Samsung calls its version Tizen. The signage player is an app installed on the display itself, so there is no separate box, no second power lead, no HDMI cable and no bracket for a player that has to live somewhere behind the screen.

That matters more than it sounds. One thing gets mounted. One thing takes power. One thing can fail. On a run of twenty screens across four buildings, halving the number of devices halves the number of site visits caused by a loose cable or an unplugged power supply.

The player behaves the same as any other. It registers with the CMS, gets authorised, pulls its content and schedule down, and plays from the local copy. If the network drops, it keeps playing what it already holds, exactly as described in digital signage without internet. You monitor it, screenshot it and reschedule it from the same place as everything else.

What you give up is separation of concerns. The panel and the player are one purchase with one lifecycle. When the computer half of a seven-year-old panel is too old for a current player build, the replacement is a display, not a box. You also inherit whatever the panel platform supports: SoC displays generally have less headroom for heavy web content than a mini-PC, and the synchronised video wall feature in easyCMS is not available on them.

What an external Android player adds

An Android player is a small box on the HDMI input. It buys you four things a built-in player cannot.

Any screen becomes a signage screen. Panels already on the wall, a display bought three years ago, a professional monitor in a meeting room, an LED wall behind its own controller. If it takes an HDMI input, it can show your content. For anyone with screens already installed, this is the whole argument.

Replacement is cheap and quick. When a player dies, you swap a box, authorise the new device and it collects the same content. You are not lifting a panel off a wall bracket or waiting on a display RMA. The steps are in adding a new display and display licences and authorisation.

One player model across a mixed estate. If your sites have panels from three brands bought over five years, standardising on one player gives you one setup procedure, one update process and one spare in the cupboard. Mixed hardware is the quiet cost that nobody budgets for.

Video walls. In easyCMS, synchronised video walls are Android only. If several screens have to play one image in step, that decision is made for you.

Good to know One more feature is Android only: the local video and RTSP stream widget. If a live camera feed or an RTSP source is part of the brief, plan for Android.

The downsides are real and mostly physical. A second device needs power, a cable and somewhere to hide, and every extra connector is another thing a cleaner can knock out. Cheap unbranded boxes are a false economy, which is the point of our player buying guide. Where Windows players still make sense

Windows is unfashionable in signage and still right in two situations.

Complicated web content. A full desktop browser handles awkward embedded pages, an intranet page that expects a proper session, or a dashboard that fights everything else. easyCMS has webpage and embedded HTML widgets, an HTML package widget and a dashboards add-on such as Power BI, and the more demanding the page, the more a mini-PC helps. An existing PC estate. If you already have managed Windows devices, an imaging process and a person who patches them, adding a signage player to that estate costs almost nothing in new process. The player software is free. Setup is covered in Windows player setup.

Against that, Windows brings the problems Windows always brings. Updates arrive on someone else’s schedule and reboot the machine, sometimes into a screen that is waiting for a click. Mini-PCs cost more than Android boxes, draw more power, have fans that collect dust, and need antivirus and patching decisions that a display does not. If the content is images, video and a weather panel, Windows is a lot of machine for the job.

The trap: a consumer TV is not a signage panel

This is the single most common expensive mistake, and it is worth being blunt about.

Watch out Consumer LG televisions are not webOS Signage models. A living-room LG runs a consumer version of webOS that does not accept signage player apps. The same distinction applies to Samsung: the Tizen in a consumer television is not the Tizen in a Samsung signage panel. Buying a smart TV and expecting to install the player will not work.

The names are close enough to mislead, and retailers rarely correct anyone. Before you order, get the exact model number from your display supplier in writing and ask them to confirm it is from the commercial signage range and runs the signage platform. That one email is cheaper than a pallet of the wrong panels.

If you already own consumer televisions, nothing is lost. Put an Android player on the HDMI input and they become signage screens, subject to the duty cycle warning in the next section. That is exactly the case an external player is good at.

Commercial panels versus consumer televisions

Even where a consumer television works, it is usually the wrong panel. Four differences matter.

Duty cycle. Consumer sets are designed for roughly four to six hours a day. Commercial panels are rated for 16/7 or 24/7 continuous operation, with better thermal design and components chosen for it. A shop window screen runs twelve to sixteen hours. A hospital corridor never stops. The gap between design intent and actual use is what kills consumer panels early.

Warranty. Consumer warranties commonly exclude commercial or continuous use. Read the terms before you save money on the panel, because a claim refused in month fourteen costs more than the difference in price.

Burn-in and image retention. Static elements are the enemy. A logo in the same corner, a menu header that never moves, a fixed price band along the bottom. Commercial panels handle it better and still do not enjoy it. Design around it: move static elements between layouts, vary backgrounds, and avoid parking a bright fixed graphic in the same pixels for months. Brightness, orientation and auto-start. Shop windows need far more brightness than a living room. Portrait mounting needs a panel rated for it, not just software rotation, and there is more on that in screen resolution and orientation. And after a power cut, a signage panel comes back into content on its own, where most consumer sets come back to a standby light and wait for a human with a remote.

Over a five-year deployment a commercial panel is usually the cheaper end of the deal. It does cost more than a consumer set of the same size, and that is the trade you are making up front.

The licence position, stated plainly

Two separate things get called a licence, and mixing them up is why quotes stop matching.

The display licence is the CMS side: one screen, authorised in your account, forever. Your 49€ account includes one, and further ones are 99€ each, one-time. Licences bought in the same order as the account are 66€ each instead, a third off, applied automatically at checkout with no code to enter. Added later they are 99€.

The commercial player licence is the platform side, and it applies to Android, webOS and Tizen because those player builds are commercial software. Windows and Linux players are free. That is exactly why the Enterprise column splits: on Enterprise at 1290€ per year, Android, webOS and Tizen displays are 49€ each, and Windows and Linux displays carry no licence charge at all. easyCMS supplies the commercial licence where one is needed. Ten screens

Ten screens is above the 5-display ceiling on the standard account, so this is a PRO account at 299€, which includes one display licence, plus nine more. Bought in the same order as the account those nine are 66€ each rather than 99€, so the software line is 299€ + (9 × 66€) = 893€.

Added later, those nine licences are 99€ each, so the same ten-screen network built up over time is 299€ + (9 × 99€) = 1,190€ on the software line. That is the honest ceiling, and it is the figure to use if you are growing a network rather than buying it in one go.

Two things fall out of that. First, on the CMS side the platform makes no difference at all: ten screens cost 893€ in one order, or 1,190€ added over time, whichever player they run. Second, the hardware line is where the money is, and SoC wins it outright because the player is already inside a panel you were buying anyway. What SoC does not tell you here is what the panel itself costs against a cheaper screen plus a box, and only your display supplier can price that.

Above 25 displays you are on Enterprise at 1290€ per year, and there the licence price depends on the platform. Android, webOS and Tizen displays are 49€ each, for the same reason as ever: those player builds are commercial software easyCMS buys in. Windows and Linux displays carry no licence charge at all, because that player software is free. On licence savings alone the annual fee covers itself at 26 Android displays, since 1290€ divided by the 50€ saved on each licence is 25.8. Thirty Android screens carry 30 × 49€ = 1,470€ of licences on top of the 1290€ fee; the same thirty screens on Windows are the 1290€ fee and nothing else, so the Windows route saves that whole 1,470€ licence line. Players drop to 299€ as well, so thirty easyCMS Android players are 8,970€ rather than 14,970€, a 6,000€ difference that changes the arithmetic for large Android rollouts considerably. Where two routes both work, pick the one your installer has done before. Familiarity beats specification on a rollout day.

Five things to confirm before you order

  1. The exact model number, confirmed by your supplier as a commercial signage model running webOS Signage or Tizen, not a consumer television.
  2. Auto-start after power loss, so the screen returns to content on its own after a power cut or a timer circuit.
  3. Portrait rating, if the screen is mounted vertically. Software rotation is not the same as a panel rated for it.
  4. A wired network drop wherever you can physically reach, which removes an entire category of fault. See network requirements.
  5. One platform per site if you can manage it, because two platforms means two update procedures and two sets of quirks. Updating is covered in updating players.

The short version

Buying new panels: go SoC, Tizen or webOS, and enjoy having one device per screen. Working with screens you already own, running a video wall, or standardising across mixed brands: buy an Android player. Running complicated web content or already managing a Windows estate: Windows, and accept the patching.

The choice that actually costs money is the panel, not the platform. Confirm the model is a commercial signage display before you order, budget for a duty cycle that matches how long the screen will really be on, and design layouts that do not park a static logo in the same pixels for two years.
