Digital Signage Software With No Monthly Fee

Digital signage software with no monthly fee genuinely exists, and there is more of it than the first page of search results suggests. It comes in three shapes: free tiers that stay free for a screen or two, one-time licences you buy once and keep, and open-source software you host yourself. This article covers all three, names the real options rather than one, and puts five-year software costs for 1, 5 and 25 screens into a single table.

We publish this and we are one of the options: easyCMS is a 49€ one-time account with a display licence included. So ignore the adjectives and read the arithmetic. Every competitor figure below comes from that vendor’s own published pricing, checked September 2026, quoted in the currency they print, with no conversion. Where a competitor is the better buy, we say so plainly.

Good to know Licences bought in the same order as an easyCMS account are a third off, 66€ each instead of 99€, applied at checkout with no code to enter. The easyCMS figures in this article are that one-order price, because it is what a buyer kitting out a network today actually pays: five screens 313€, ten on PRO 893€, twenty-five 1 883€. Add screens later and those licences are 99€ each, so the same three networks are 445€, 1 190€ and 2 675€. That is the ceiling, and it is still one payment.

Three ways to stop paying monthly

These get blurred together constantly, and they behave very differently once you have more than one screen.

A free tier that stays free. A vendor gives you one or a few screens permanently at no cost, funded by the customers who outgrow it. Real, useful, and capped. The cap is the product.

A one-time licence. You pay once for the right to run the software and keep running it. Either the vendor hosts it for you, or you install it on your own machine. The risk is what “once” quietly excludes: updates, hosting, storage, support.

Open-source software you host yourself. The software costs nothing. The server, the updates, the backups and your own hours cost something, and that something is not zero.

Good to know “No monthly fee” and “no recurring cost” are not the same claim. Hosting, storage overage and support contracts are all places a monthly fee reappears after the licence has been paid. The questions at the end of this article are the ones that flush them out.

The free-forever tiers

These are the cheapest option that exists, and if one of them fits your screen count you should take it instead of paying anybody, including us.

Yodeck: one screen, free, permanently

Yodeck’s free plan covers a single screen forever, with unlimited storage. Paid tiers run at $8 / 8€ per screen per month on Basic, $12 on Premium and $16 on Enterprise.

That free plan is the strongest single-screen offer on this page and it beats easyCMS outright. One screen on easyCMS is 49€. One screen on Yodeck is nothing, and comes with more storage than our 1GB. If your project is one lobby screen and it is likely to stay one lobby screen, start there.

OptiSigns: three screens free, with a visible catch

OptiSigns gives you up to three screens free. Two conditions come with it: the OptiSigns logo is displayed on your screen, and support is community only. Paid Standard is $10 per screen per month, $9 on annual billing or 7.50€, with Pro at $12.50, Pro Plus at $15, Engage at $30 and Enterprise from $45 with a 25-screen minimum.

Watch out A vendor logo burned onto a customer-facing screen is fine in a workshop and awkward in a hotel lobby. Decide which of your screens the public actually sees before you plan around a free tier that brands them.

Three free screens with community-only support is still a serious offer for internal displays, a warehouse, a staff room, a back office. Nobody complains about a logo in a staff canteen.

digitalsignage.com: free up to three screens, and a cheap paid tier

digitalsignage.com is the price floor among the hosted paid options: mediaCLOUD+ is $3.00 per screen per month, and up to three screens are free. They also publish mediaSERVER, a perpetual on-premise build you run on your own server, at $895 one-time with player licences of $135 to $195 and optional support at $39 per licence per year, checked September 2026. Read their current terms before you plan a deployment around it.

The pattern across all three is the same. Free tiers are real, they are generous below about three screens, and they stop being an option the moment a rollout starts. There is more detail on which ones survive contact with a real deployment in our guide to free digital signage software.

The pay-once licences

Four honest notes before anyone quotes us in a comparison.

Enterprise is a subscription. It is 1290€ per year and it is the only recurring plan we sell. Above 25 displays you pay us annually, and the argument for it is that the fee covers the whole estate instead of scaling with every screen. What a licence costs on it depends on the platform: Android, LG webOS and Samsung Tizen displays are 49€ each, because those players carry a commercial licence we buy in, and Windows and Linux displays carry no licence charge at all, because that player software is free. On Android the annual fee covers itself on licence savings alone at 26 displays, since each one drops from 99€ to 49€ and 1290 divided by 50 is 25.8. On Windows or Linux it covers itself sooner, because those licences go to zero.

There is no free plan and no free trial. If you want to try signage at zero cost, that is the Yodeck and OptiSigns paragraphs above, not this one.

Storage is our weakest line: 1GB on the account, 5GB on PRO, 20GB on Enterprise. Yodeck’s free plan has unlimited storage. If your content is long-form video, work out your library size first, using storage quota and media uploads or our note on storage requirements.

The CMS is hosted by us in the European Union and built on the open-source Xibo 4.5 engine, which we disclose rather than hide. That matters for the “what if the vendor disappears” question later on.

Mvix

Mvix sells perpetual licensing, typically bundled with the media player hardware rather than as software on its own. That model suits a fixed installation quoted once by an integrator. We have not price-checked their current bundles, so treat any number you read elsewhere, including a competitor roundup like this one, as needing confirmation from their sales team.

FrontFace

FrontFace sells a perpetual licence for a Windows-based player, installed on your own machines. If your estate is already Windows and already managed by IT, a perpetual Windows licence is a sensible shape of purchase. Again, confirm the current licence price with the vendor rather than with us.

Traditional on-premise perpetual signage

The enterprise version of pay-once has been around for decades and is still quoted. The shape is a one-time server licence plus a one-time licence per screen, and most vendors in this category quote rather than publish. The one published example we have checked is digitalsignage.com’s mediaSERVER: $895 one-time for the server, player licences at $135 to $195 each, and optional support at $39 per licence per year, checked September 2026.

That is not cheap, and for a small deployment it is far more expensive than any subscription on this page. It exists because some organisations need the software inside their own network with no vendor connection at all. If that is a hard requirement from your IT or security team, this is the category you are shopping in, and no 49€ account is going to satisfy it.

Hosting Xibo yourself

Worth its own section, because it is the most genuinely free option here and we are built on the same engine.

Xibo is open source under the AGPLv3. You can download it, install it on a server you control, connect Windows and Linux players for free, and never pay a software fee. That is not a trick and we are not going to talk you out of it.

What it costs instead: a server and its hosting bill, an SSL certificate and a domain, the upgrade work every time a new version lands, database backups that someone has tested, and the hours when something breaks at 17:30 on a Friday. Android, LG webOS and Samsung Tizen players still need a commercial per-display licence, whoever hosts the CMS.

If you have a systems administrator with spare capacity, self-hosting is excellent value. If you do not, you have converted a software bill into an unbudgeted people bill, which is the most expensive kind. The middle path is a hosted Xibo: the vendor runs the server, you run the signage. For reference, Xibo’s own cloud hosting starts at 4,40€ per display per month on the Professional plan, which is a subscription rather than a one-time purchase.

Five-year software cost: 1, 5 and 25 screens

Assumptions, stated plainly. Software only, over 60 months, since the display, mount, player and installation are the same whichever CMS you pick. Entry paid tiers throughout, which is the least flattering reading for easyCMS. Prices are in the currency each vendor publishes and are not converted. Competitor pricing checked September 2026, so verify before you rely on it.

easyCMS at 5 screens is the 49€ account plus four licences bought in the same order at 66€: 49€ + 264€ = 313€. At 25 screens it is a PRO account, which already includes one display licence, plus 24 licences in the same order: 299€ + 1,584€ = 1,883€. Add those screens later instead and the licences are 99€ each, so the same two networks are 445€ and 2,675€ at list. Either way it is one payment.

Three things that table says out loud.

At five and twenty-five screens the one-time price is the lowest of every paid row in the table, and it is the only one that stops. Five screens is 313€, paid once. The same five screens on Yodeck Basic are 480€ a year: 1,440€ by the end of year three, 2,400€ by the end of year five, and still billing in year six. Twenty-five screens is 1,883€ once, against 2,400€ a year on Yodeck, which is 7,200€ by year three and 12,000€ by year five. Buy the screens later at 99€ each and the easyCMS totals rise to 445€ and 2,675€, which is still below every paid row in the table at those counts. Since we are not converting currencies, the comparison against the dollar rows is indicative rather than exact.

At one screen we lose. Yodeck free is 0€ and easyCMS is 49€, and no amount of arithmetic changes that. digitalsignage.com’s free tier covers three screens, ours covers none.

Rise Vision’s $1,399 per school per year for unlimited displays is the one plan that beats us on density. At 25 screens we are cheaper. Push it to 100 screens in one building and easyCMS needs Enterprise at 1290€ a year plus a licence for every Android, webOS or Tizen display. Assuming Android players, which is the usual choice in a school, that is 6,450€ of subscription plus 4,900€ of licences, so 11,350€ over five years against $6,995 for the Rise Vision school plan. Different currencies, so it is a rough comparison, but the direction is not close. Run those 100 screens on Windows or Linux players instead and the licences cost nothing on Enterprise, which brings the five years to 6,450€ and makes it a genuinely close call. If you are a school putting a lot of screens in one site, go and look at Rise Vision, and price the Windows route before you assume Android.

Break-even, in months

Percentage savings are marketing. Months are a fact you can check against your own plans, so here is the crossover point where the one-time purchase has paid for itself against a subscription.

So: roughly six months for a first screen, eight to nine months for each screen bought alongside it, and about ten months for a full 25-screen build. Screens added later cost 99€ a licence, which pushes those rows out by three to four months: a single later licence breaks even at 12.4 months against Yodeck, five screens at list breaks even at 11.1 months and 25 at list at 13.4 months. If the screens will be on the wall for more than about a year, buying wins. If they will not, it does not.

Against a genuinely free tier there is no break-even at all. One screen on Yodeck free never costs anything, so easyCMS never catches up. That is the honest end of the sentence, and it is why the free tiers are at the top of this article rather than buried.

When a subscription is genuinely the better buy

We sell one-time licences, so read this section as us arguing against ourselves.

Short deployments. A pop-up, a three-month exhibition, a seasonal activation. Ten screens for one quarter at 8€ each is 240€. Nothing you can buy outright beats renting for that.

Pilots you might abandon. If you are unsure signage is right for you, the cheapest way to find out is a free tier, then a monthly plan. Spending 313€ to discover that nobody looks at the screen is a worse outcome than spending 40€.

When storage or an app library is the point. Yodeck’s unlimited storage on a free plan, and the larger platforms’ template galleries and integration marketplaces, are real advantages. easyCMS has no template gallery and no app marketplace. If a specific integration is the reason the project exists, buy the platform that has it.

When features we do not have decide it. No SSO or SAML here, no charts widget, no Twitter or X widget, no native mobile app. If one of those is on your requirements list, this comparison is already over.

When procurement prefers opex. Some finance teams approve a recurring line item far more easily than a capital purchase, even when the capital purchase is cheaper. That is a real constraint and not worth fighting over a few hundred euros.

Questions to ask before you buy anything sold as “lifetime”

A one-time licence is only worth what it still lets you do in year four. Ask every vendor on your shortlist, including us:

• Are updates included for the life of the account, or only for a support window?
• Is hosting included? A one-time licence with a monthly hosting bill is a subscription with extra steps.
• What is the storage limit, and what does exceeding it cost per year?
• Can I move a licence to replacement hardware when a player dies, and how many times?
• What is the support commitment in writing, and what costs extra?
• Is the underlying platform open source, so I can keep running it if you disappear?

Our own answers, for the record: updates are free, hosting in the EU is included with the storage stated per tier, licences are per screen and are managed in the CMS as described in display licences and authorisation, hands-on support is sold by the hour at 25€ rather than bundled, and the engine is open-source Xibo. The paid extra is the 25€ Expert Support Hour, which we refund if the root cause turns out to be a bug in easyCMS. Everything else, the AI assistant and 25 written guides at support, is free to everyone with no account at all.

The short version

If you need one screen, take Yodeck’s free plan. If you need up to three internal screens and can live with a logo on them, take OptiSigns’ free plan. If you have a systems administrator with spare hours, self-host Xibo and pay nobody.

If you need five, ten or twenty-five screens that look professional, are supported, and stop costing money after the first year, a one-time licence is the cheaper structure, and it pays for itself somewhere between month six and month ten if you buy the screens in one order, three to four months later than that if you add them one at a time.
